Why Politics Code Blue?

Megan Marcelle

In our hospitals, Code Blue means someone is experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency.

American politics, the U.S. Constitution and our very democracy are in the throes of a life-threatening emergency.  Donald Trump could be the next President of the United States.  In 2020, after four years of Trump’s horror show of a Presidency, he came within 43,000 votes in three states of winning the electoral college.

With Cornel West running a misguided third party candidacy and with a threatened bid by “No Labels,” Trump is in position to potentially win another term in the White House.

A Trump victory would pose a mortal threat to American democracy. Trump and the Republican Party he has commandeered represent a clear and present danger to the United States of America as we have always known it.  To the Constitutional order we have always taken for granted.  Trump and Trumpism must be soundly defeated at the polls in the 2024 election.

The Republican Party has been captured by a leader who just three years ago rode his Big Lie all the way to a violent attempt to seize power after losing a free and fair election. By a leader who welcomes avowed neo-Nazis, white supremacists and anti-Semite holocaust deniers to his campaign.

Trump’s Republican Party incessantly peddles in lies and disinformation and has a huge right-wing media echo chamber amplifying the daily falsehoods.

And they’ll do anything to win.  Lying about fake voter fraud.  (Actual voter fraud is virtually non-existent).  Gerrymandering.  Voter suppression. Intimidation.  Threats of violence. Actual violence.  Whatever it takes and whatever they can get away with.  This is how fascists take power.

The Republican National Committee has declared that the January 6th attack on our nation’s capitol was “legitimate political discourse.”   That says everything we need to know about Donald Trump’s Republican Party.

Politics has always been a rough sport.  Major differences have always separated Democrats and Republicans.  Elections have always been hard fought.  But at the end of every race in my long lifetime and indeed throughout American history, the loser concedes the election, congratulates the winner and power always passes peacefully.

Indeed, one of the great hallmarks of our country has been the peaceful transfer of power.  From one administration to the next and from one political party to the other.  That all ended with Donald Trump, the whiniest most pathetic sore loser in the history of American politics.

One of the great hallmarks of our country has been the peaceful transfer of power.  From one administration to the next and from one political party to the other.  That all ended with Donald Trump, the whiniest most pathetic sore loser in the history of American politics.

And at the same time, a master of demagoguery, who has seduced tens of millions of Americans who believe his self-serving lies and who now hold the Republican Party hostage.

Any Republican who dares to call out the many obvious and despicable truths about Donald Trump is drummed out of the party (Liz Cheney, Adam Kinsinger) or doomed to be defeated (Chris Christie).

Apart from Christie, most of his 2024 primary opponents are afraid to take Trump on.  Afraid of his bullying and of the electoral power of the MAGA cult in a Republican Primary.

The Republican Party has disgraced itself by supporting or enabling all of Trump’s horrible words and deeds throughout his presidency and post-presidency.

The Republican Party has disgraced itself by supporting or enabling all of Trump’s horrible words and deeds throughout his presidency and post-presidency.

For a brief moment it seemed that his attempt to violently overthrow the government might finally be enough for the party to reject him once and for all.  Even a violent attempted coup d’etat was not enough to move the party away from him.

Kevin McCarthy briefly spoke the truth about January 6th, then promptly went crawling to Mara Lago begging forgiveness.

Lindsey Graham also said he was done with Trump after January 6th.  Then he caught some flak from a handful of MAGA devotees at Reagan Airport and came whimpering back to his master.  More recently, Lindsey has been seen on TV weeping and grifting the hard-earned cash of Trump’s supporters on behalf of his dear leader.

Mitch McConnell was rhetorically forceful in denouncing Trump’s attempted violent overthrow of the election but voted “No” to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial.  McConnell later said he would “absolutely” support Trump if he’s the nominee in 2024.

Now, after four indictments, the Republican Party has again rallied to Trump’s defense, while attacking the Department of Justice and the FBI for attempting to hold Trump accountable for his crimes.

The Republican Party is apparently just fine with Donald Trump stealing nuclear secrets and other top-secret military information.  Plotting a coup to remain in power after losing an election—today’s Republicans are all aboard the Trump train.

Today’s spineless and cowardly Republican Party refuses to put country before party.  It has shown itself willing to tear down democracy and the rule of law all on behalf of Donald Trump, a man of such pathetically low character that he brags about committing sexual assault, mocks people with disabilities, and scorns our veterans who gave their lives as “suckers and losers.”

Donald Trump and his acquiescent Republican Party have created a Code Blue national emergency and must be thoroughly repudiated in the 2024 election.  Politics Code Blue will dedicate itself to that cause between now and November 2024.  We will do everything possible to expose today’s Republican Party for what it has become.  At the same time, we will make the case that Joe Biden and the Democratic Party, though far from perfect, deserve our full support and must win in 2024.

We launch Politics Code Blue as a call to action for massive civic engagement to save and strengthen our democracy and to meet the immense challenges of our time—climate change, poverty, hunger, reproductive freedom, gun violence, nuclear proliferation and economic, racial and gender inequality.

Fascism is at our doorstep.  We must all Register, Volunteer, Donate and VOTE!  2024 is an election America cannot afford to lose!
